Made for Seven-Day Roguelike Challenge (7DRL) in 2016.

We received an overall rating of 2.25/3 and the jury described our game as follows:

"Metamorph has you fighting a series of giant monsters, the twist being that the way you defeat each of those monsters determines how the next one will be generated. Rely too much on the slow-moving 'spell' projectiles, for example, and the enemies will begin to shift around to avoid them. It's an interesting idea that has been quite well implemented."

"More puzzly than roguelike, this game is a series of open-arena matches against the same boss monster over and over - but on each new level that boss monster changes in response to what the player did on the previous level. Might need work for balance, but an awesome prototype of an idea."

Controls:

[W/A/S/D] Switch stance to Walking/Attacking/Spellcasting/Shooting Pistol; This takes up a turn.
[NumPad/ViKeys] Execute selected action; This obviously takes a turn too.
[5/.] Pass turn

Gameplay:

Your goal is to kill the main body (M) of the enemy to advance further and finally get to level 16 and escape the dungeon. Of course your foe won't just let you do so without resistance. It grew arms with different functions similar to your actions (F-Fire cannon (Shoots spells); R-Revolver(Shoots bullets); S-Spawner(Spawns melee-minions)). You can destroy the end of any arm by either attacking it directly or attacking any part of the arm it is attached to.

Over multiple levels, your enemies will learn the tools you are using against them and take measures to fight you more effectively. As such, the clear the game you will need to withhold information about the stronger tools in your arsenal by using them as little as possible.

Attacking is melee only. Casting a spell takes 2 MP (Mana Points) which are regenerated by walking. Shooting your pistol takes a bullet. You get bullets by attacking bullet boxes (+). The numbers on the map represent walls with the value representing their strength. Enemy HP is indicated by color.


Troubleshooting:

If rendering doesn't work correctly, you might need to increase the size of your console, by going into Properties -> Layout and setting the Width-Attribute for Screen Buffer Size and Window Size to at least 128.

i clicked run, and nothing opened

Hmm, for me this still works. Did you really not get any error message? What operating system are you using?

false alarm, itch couldn't open it. I can still open it by clicking the file in file explorer.
